Description

Black horehound (Ballota nigra) is a plant species from the labiate family that is mainly native to Central Europe. Similar to its relatives (stinging nettle, dead nettle, golden nettle), it grows as a herbaceous plant with several hairy stems and stalked, opposite leaves. It grows to a height of up to one meter.

Properties

Due to the flavonoids it contains (apigenin, luteolin, scutellarein) as well as essential oils and bitter substances, black horehound is said to have spasmolytic properties in folk medicine. These appear to have positive effects, particularly in the case of respiratory complaints.

Possible uses

The extract of the flavonoids, bitter substances and essential oils contained in black horehound can be used in combination with other plant extracts to promote natural respiratory function and can also be used to support respiratory complaints.
