Burdock (Arctium lappa)
Description
Burdock is widespread throughout Eurasia, reaching a height of 80 to 150 cm and is related to the artichoke. In traditional Chinese medicine, the seeds and roots of burdock are primarly used due their specific properties.
Properties
The roots of burdock contain polysaccharides with high antioxidant properties as well as arctigenin, an aglycone of arctiin, and lignans (Arctigenin, Diarctigenin) with properties that promote immune defense. Further ingredients are hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, sterols and polyins.
Possible uses
Preliminary research suggests burdock might have free radical scavenging activity giving it a possible hepatoprotective quality. Burdock can be used as an adjunct for skin conditions (eczema), to promote digestion, strengthen kidney function and improve the expectoration of thick mucus from the respiratory tract.
