Glycine
Glycine is a proteinogenic amino acid and is an important component of almost all proteins and a central hub in the metabolism due to its hydrophilic properties
Sources
Glycine is mainly formed from the essential amino acid serine and therefore is not an essential amino acid for the horse
Daily requirements
No studies have been conducted to establish the requirements of the horse for glycine
Deficiency
A deficiency in glycine has not been observed in horses to date and has not been produced experimentally
Excess
An excess of glycine has not been observed in horses to date and has not been produced experimentally
Important to know
- Glycine is one of the main components of type II collagen; due to its small molecular size, it allows the typical folding of collagen into its triple structure
- Among other things, glycine is also required for the synthesis of certain components of DNA
- Glycine is also required for the synthesis of the red blood pigment (heme) and for the production of the free radical scavenging enzyme glutathione
