Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.)

Artichoke is a thistle-like, cultivated plant from the Asteraceae family and is mainly used to support the liver function and strengthen the entire metabolism.

Description

Artichoke grows in the Mediterranean region and South America but nowadays is cultivated nearly everywhere. Artichooke has been announced as medicinal plant of the year 2003.

Properties

Artichoke leaves contain primarily phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, cynarin), sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids (luteolin, cynaroside and scolymoside) and therefore are said to have lipid-lowering and hepatostimulating properties.

Possible uses

Preparations made from artichoke leaves are primarily used to treat liver dysfunction and can also have a positive effect in supporting metabolic overload.

Important to know

Artichoke leaves may not be used as an active ingredient in food-producing animals in the EU!
