Mullein Flowers (Verbascum thapsiforme)

Description
The biennial plant is widespread in Europe, temperate Asia and North America and can grow up to 2 m high. Large yellow flowers in apical spike-like racemes.
Properties
Mullein flower blossoms contain approximately 3% watersoluble mucilage polysaccharides, flavonoids (rutin, hisperidine, diosmin) and saponin (verbascosaponine) with expectorant properties.
Possible uses
Several effects of mullein flowers can strengthen upper respiratory tract mechanisms. The contained mucilage can protect and moisten dry mucous membranes, relieve coughing and liquefy viscous mucus. The saponins can promote the expectoration of mucus.
Important to know
Expectorant actions may be due to the plant’s saponin content. Avoid confusion with goldenrod (Solidago species).
